NER Solo Airways – Highlights and Recap

Written by David Bocchichio Saturday May 15th turned out to be a beautiful day with temperatures in the 70s.  After a wet and rainy event back on April 25th, drivers were excited to see one of the nicest spring days yet. It was great to see over a hundred drivers out to compete on such a beautiful day.  Street Class AS had five competitors with 143 Mark Ponusky taking first place in the 2002 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 with a 57.191. DS was stacked with 10 drivers and top time went to 93 Steve Twaddle in the 2013 Scion FR-S with a 59.799.  ES had five drivers with first place going to 148 Gavin Williams in the 2004 Toyota MR2 with a 59.094.  FS saw 6 drivers competing with first place going to 74 Dana Nicgorski in the 2018 Ford Mustang GT with a 59.920. GS had seven drivers with fastest time going to 24 Chang Ho Kim in the 2019 Honda Civic with a 59.750.  HS was another large class with 10 drivers and taking top spot was 41 Joseph Lagdao in the 2018 Ford Fiesta ST with a 61.298.  [...]

NER Springtime Coneage

By David Bocchichio Photo by Shawn Pan It was a cloudy morning but the rain held off while everyone was setting up. Just as we gathered for the driver's meeting the rain came in. It continued to come down at a steady clip for both morning run groups, making conditions quite slick for competitors. Drivers were raring to go after the first non-points event back on April 4th, which saw dry conditions in combination with a fast course. Photo by Jacob Ronald Non-Pros Take Pax As lunch came to an end the rain began to ease. The drying conditions tempted many drivers to push their limits resulting in both fast times and epic spins. The challenging conditions made for some interesting results according to Alex Jackson, NER Autocross Chairman, “Pro class is pax'd and it typically consists of the fastest drivers in the region competing against each other rather than in their base classes. It occasionally happens that someone outside of pro gets top pax at the event like [...]

Finding A New Beginning Through Autocross

Written by David Bocchichio On Sunday, April 4, 2021 my 17 year old son Liam and I had a chance to attend our first Regional Solo at Devens Airfield, in Ayer, MA.  To say that we were a little nervous would be putting it mildly.  After attending several local events last year, on smaller lots in our home state of Connecticut, we at least understood the basic process. But the scale of everything up at Devens was so much bigger and I had my son in his own car to worry about.  However, after what our family has gone through over the last year, we felt ready for anything. 2020 Turns Life Upside Down March 2020 went the same for us as it did for most people across the world. Our lives were put on hold due to Coronavirus lockdows.  Things began to spiral out of control for us soon after as weird health issues that had been plaguing me for many years suddenly worsened.  In the fall of 2020 I was finally diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called Mixed Connective Tissue Disorder, putting an end to a lifetime [...]
